Kolkata, Feb 2 (PTI) – In a shocking case from West Bengal’s Howrah district, a woman allegedly convinced her husband to sell his kidney for ₹10 lakh under the pretext of securing funds for their daughter’s education, only to flee with the entire amount along with another man.
Police have launched an investigation based on a complaint filed by the husband’s family, who reside in Sankrail. According to the complaint, the woman had been pressuring her husband for over a year to sell his kidney, promising that the money would be used to improve their household’s financial situation and enroll their 12-year-old daughter in a reputed school.
Trusting his wife’s intentions, the man agreed to undergo the surgery, after which she reportedly finalized a deal with a buyer for ₹10 lakh. The procedure was conducted last month, and upon returning home with the money, the man was advised by his wife to rest and avoid stepping out to ensure a quick recovery.
However, in a cruel twist, the woman soon vanished from their home, taking the entire cash sum and additional valuables stored in the almirah. Suspicions arose when she failed to return, and with the help of friends and acquaintances, the husband’s family managed to trace her to a residence in Barrackpore, a northern suburb of Kolkata.
Upon reaching the house, the family discovered that she was living with another man, whom she had allegedly been in a relationship with for over a year after meeting him on Facebook. When confronted by her husband, mother-in-law, and daughter, she refused to step out. Meanwhile, her alleged lover claimed that she planned to file for divorce, citing 16 years of physical and mental abuse by her in-laws.
Speaking to reporters, the man denied his wife’s allegations and insisted that she had taken the ₹10 lakh from their home. However, the woman countered that she had only taken her personal savings.
Authorities have since launched a probe, reviewing video footage of the confrontation and statements from both parties. Police have confirmed that they will question the woman and her lover before taking any further legal action.
The case has sparked widespread shock and debate, highlighting both the financial desperation that drives extreme decisions and the devastating consequences of betrayal within a marriage.
