Kolkata, Feb 3 (PTI) – A woman was discovered in an injured state in an open field in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, with Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar alleging she was abducted and raped.
The distressing incident occurred on Sunday in Jangalia village, located in the Joynagar area. Authorities confirmed that the woman was initially admitted to a local medical facility and later transferred to Baruipur Hospital, where her condition remains stable but critical, according to a senior police officer.
Family members of the victim revealed that she had left her home on Saturday night but failed to reach her intended destination, sparking concern for her safety.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Majumdar, who also serves as the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accused the police of failing to act promptly, suggesting the woman was abducted, brutally raped, and even attempted to be strangled with a scarf.
The BJP leader further criticized the state government, claiming that crimes against women were being ignored. He voiced his anger over Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s silence on the issue, despite the fact that the incident occurred during Saraswati Puja, a significant cultural celebration in West Bengal.
“Even on the day of Saraswati Puja, the brutality of crimes against women did not stop in West Bengal! Yet, the shameless female Chief Minister of Bengal has not uttered a single word. What kind of monstrous government is running in West Bengal, where brutal murders and rapes are happening every day?” Majumdar wrote.
Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway, with the police promising to apprehend those responsible for the crime soon.
