Jalna, February 4 (PTI) – In a shocking incident, a woman was rescued from captivity after being allegedly chained by her parents for two months in a remote village in Maharashtra’s Jalna district. Acting on the directions of the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court, police intervened on Monday to free the woman, an official confirmed.
The victim, identified as Shahnaz alias Sonal, was found confined in her parents’ house in Alapur village of Bhokardan tehsil. According to authorities, her parents resorted to the drastic measure due to their disapproval of her interfaith marriage.
Shahnaz, who is in her 20s, had married against her parents' wishes and has a three-year-old son with her husband. Two months ago, she visited her parents' home with her child. However, in an extreme act of resistance against her marital choice, her parents refused to let her return, allegedly keeping her chained and isolated.
Her husband, after repeated unsuccessful attempts to bring her back, was denied access to the house. Left with no other option, he approached the court, which then directed the police to take action. Following a raid on the residence, a police team rescued Shahnaz and her son, handing them over to her husband through a government lawyer.
As of now, no case has been registered against the parents. Authorities stated that further action would depend on whether the woman files a formal complaint.
This case highlights ongoing societal challenges surrounding interfaith marriages and the extreme measures some families resort to in opposition. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
