Ranchi, February 28: The literacy rate of women in Jharkhand has grown at a significantly faster pace than that of men over the past five years, according to the state economic survey presented in the assembly on Friday.
Between 2019-20 and 2023-24, the male literacy rate increased at an annual average rate of 0.47%, whereas female literacy saw a much higher annual growth rate of 2.5% during the same period.
As per the survey, in 2019-20, the literacy rate stood at 81.4% for men and 64.1% for women. By 2023-24, the figures had risen to 82.8% for men and 70.6% for women, highlighting a considerable improvement in women's literacy.
Additionally, Jharkhand's gender disparity index in literacy has improved from 0.79 in 2019-20 to 0.85 in 2023-24, bringing it closer to the national average of 0.86 for the same period.
Since achieving statehood in 2000, Jharkhand’s overall literacy rate has surged from 53% to 76% in 2023-24, marking an impressive growth of 43% over the years.
The data underscores the state's progress in bridging the literacy gap and empowering women through education, aligning with national literacy trends.
