New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) – Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to work collectively in shaping policies that enhance Bharat’s global stature while maintaining the dignity of Parliament. His remarks came during the third day of the Budget session, which saw a brief Opposition walkout after their notices to suspend the day's scheduled business were not approved. Among the issues they sought to raise was a discussion on the Maha Kumbh.

Addressing the House, Dhankhar emphasized the importance of a vibrant and functional Parliament as the foundation of democracy. Before his statement, he extended birthday wishes to MPs Prem Chand Gupta and Naresh Bansal.

Parliament as the Cornerstone of Democracy

Marking the 267th session of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar highlighted its significance as the first session in the last quarter-century since the adoption of the Constitution on November 26, 1949. He paid tribute to the visionary founding fathers, crediting their wisdom for crafting a Constitution that has shaped Bharat’s destiny.

"In these 75 years, our nation has embraced modernity while staying rooted in its timeless heritage. Our aspirations have driven progress in digital innovation, sustainable development, space exploration, and infrastructure," Dhankhar remarked. He reiterated the guiding mantra of Vikas with Virasat (development with heritage), stressing that the goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047 must steer collective efforts.

Call for Constructive Deliberations

Dhankhar urged Rajya Sabha members to rise to the occasion with unwavering resolve, reminding them of their role as guardians of constitutional values and pioneers of progressive thought. "As the House of Elders, let us follow the path laid by our founding fathers and ensure our contributions leave a lasting impact in history," he said.

He called for exemplary conduct, constructive deliberations, and actions focused on the welfare of the 1.4 billion citizens who trust them. "A Parliament that thrives on healthy debate is crucial for democracy. It is here that the voices of a diverse, dynamic, and aspirational society converge," he noted.

Commitment to National Progress

Stressing the importance of unity and cooperation, Dhankhar encouraged MPs to work across political divides for policies that elevate Bharat’s global standing. "As we commence this session, let us deliberate with purpose, dignity, and vision, ensuring that our legislative decisions are in service of the nation," he added.

Dhankhar also reflected on the Maha Kumbh, calling it a profound representation of India’s spiritual and cultural ethos. He emphasized the values of unity in diversity, collective well-being, truth, tolerance, and harmony, urging lawmakers to embrace these principles in their governance approach.
