New Delhi, February 26—Zydus Lifesciences has announced the introduction of VaxiFlu-4, India's first quadrivalent influenza vaccine designed to protect against four new strains of the influenza virus. Developed by the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommended composition, the vaccine aims to provide broader protection against seasonal flu outbreaks.

In a statement, the Ahmedabad-based pharmaceutical company highlighted that VaxiFlu-4 is an inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine that covers both influenza A and influenza B strains, significantly reducing the risk of vaccine mismatch. The vaccine has received clearance from the Central Drug Laboratory (CDL), marking a significant milestone in India's influenza prevention efforts.

Zydus Lifesciences Managing Director Sharvil Patel emphasized the critical role of preventive healthcare in improving public health outcomes. “Vaccines like VaxiFlu-4 support annual immunization efforts and help prevent flu outbreaks, particularly in high-risk groups,” Patel said. He also underscored the need for affordable, high-quality vaccines in India to address persistent healthcare challenges.

The company stated that it was developed at its Vaccine Technology Centre (VTC) in Ahmedabad. With seasonal and occasional influenza outbreaks posing a significant public health concern, the availability of a quadrivalent vaccine is expected to enhance flu control efforts.

Influenza, a contagious respiratory illness, spreads through airborne respiratory droplets or direct contact with infected individuals or surfaces. It can cause mild to severe illness and, in some cases, lead to hospitalization or even fatalities, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children under five, the elderly, and individuals with chronic health conditions.

According to WHO estimates, seasonal influenza is responsible for 290,000 to 650,000 deaths annually worldwide. The introduction of VaxiFlu-4 is expected to bolster India's fight against the flu by offering a comprehensive immunization solution.
