Puducherry, April 2 Congress leader Mukul Wasnik expressed concern on Thursday over Prime Minister Narendra Modi not taking any steps to transform the union territory into "BEST Puducherry."
Speaking to reporters at the PCC office here, he said the Prime Minister, during a rally leading up to the 2021 elections, had stated that the union territory would become "BEST Puducherry."
He had promised that in "Business, Education, Spirituality, and Tourism (BEST)," Puducherry would emerge as an excellent performer. "What steps has the Prime Minister taken to make this promise a reality," the AICC general secretary asked.
"Instead of becoming BEST Puducherry, it has now become the worst-administered state in the country," he alleged.
The INDI bloc, comprising the Congress, DMK, and VCK, will win in the April 9 elections and remove the "unholy alliance between AINRC and BJP in Puducherry," he said.
Wasnik further criticized the union territory government. "Corruption is the norm in the present administration. Drug abuse, particularly among school children, is a major concern in Puducherry. The Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry himself has stated that 23 per cent of children, particularly those in government schools, are affected by drug abuse. This is the biggest man-made disaster," he alleged.
The Congress leader also wanted to know what had happened to the promise the Prime Minister and the AINRC leader and Chief Minister N Rangasamy had made to the people that Puducherry would become a state. "Several promises made to the people were unfulfilled, and no action has been taken by the Prime Minister," he claimed.
"The present government in Puducherry is the weakest that the union territory has ever seen," he alleged.
Wasnik was here to campaign for the candidates of the INDIA bloc in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Puducherry PCC leader V Vaithilingam, former Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, and VCK general secretary D Ravikumar were among those present at the press meet.
